A local woman who is part of a team of students running across America to raise money and awareness for cancer made a stop near her hometown Friday. Morgan Kinkade, a 2015 graduate from IKM-Manning High School, started her journey on the Ulman Cancer Fund’s annual 4K for Cancer in San Francisco, Calif. on June 16 and has traveled through seven different states on her way to Carroll. According to Kinkade, similar trips have been hosted every summer for the last 17 years.
That money goes back to directly help cancer patients. Kinkade and her 20 teammates take turns running about 12 miles each per day, and the early mornings and long treks can be draining, and that is why they choose a person affected by cancer to run for on each leg of the trip to remind them why they are out there.
The group is just over halfway done with their 49-day journey. They will be back on the road early Saturday morning on their way to the finish line.
They are expected to reach their destination on Saturday, Aug. 4. When finished, Kinkade and her team will have traveled over 4,000 miles through 14 states. Kinkade will be returning to the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) after the run to finish out her senior year in the exercise science program.
