Forgery Suspect Tries To Hide From Authorities Under Motel Mattress

Police found a forgery suspect hiding under a mattress in his girlfriend’s motel room Saturday in Storm Lake. The Storm Lake Police Department reports that 37-year-old Shane Meyer of Storm Lake was taken into custody Saturday morning after officers tracked him down for cashing forged checks. Authorities were contacted at approximately 9:37 a.m. when the victim told them that several personal checks had been taken from their residence, as far back as Tuesday, April 10. He said two of the checks had been cashed on April 11 and April 12. While police were taking the report, a call came in from Citizens 1st National Bank’s north branch that someone was forging and cashing a third check from that account. Meyer was identified and was last seen walking southbound from the bank. Officers learned that Meyer’s girlfriend, 36-year-old Lindsey Mortensen of Storm Lake, was staying at a local motel, and proceeded to North Lake Avenue to question her. While in the room, they observed the mattress moving, and found Meyer hiding underneath. He was transported to the Buena Vista County jail and charged with ongoing criminal conduct, a class B felony, three counts of forgery, class D felonies, and violation of a no contact order, a simple misdemeanor. Mortensen was found to be in possession of a stolen credit card from the same victim’s address and was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property and violation of a no contact order, both simple misdemeanors. Both Meyer and Mortensen are being held without bond.
