State Law To Govern The Use Of Fireworks In Sac City This Fourth Of July

Sac City citizens will be able to celebrate the Fourth of July by lighting their own fireworks for the first in nearly 80 years. The community does not have an ordinance in their city code specifically banning the use of first- and second-class consumer fireworks, so when Governor Branstad signed Senate File 489 into law in May, the only rules governing fireworks come from the state level. City Administrator, Jamie Lawrence, says if any issues come up over the holiday city codes may change to reflect that.

Initial discussions on what restrictions the city may consider have taken place. The most likely change would be limiting the dates and times fireworks could be set off. While no official regulations are in place, Lawrence says city and public safety officials have recommendations.

He adds being considerate towards fellow citizens will go a long way in avoiding problems. With no additional regulations on fireworks at this time, consumers must follow state law, which allows for their use from June 1 to July 8 and from December 10 to Jan. 3 A link to Senate File 489 can be found included below this story.
