Scams Being Reported Nearly Daily

Local authorities are receiving notifications, nearly on a daily basis, about the many different scams that are occurring in our area. Yesterday (Thursday), at approximately 2:48 p.m., the Jefferson Police Department received a complaint from a resident who said they had been contacted by someone saying they needed access to their home computer to conduct a repair to the anti-virus software. The resident allowed the access only to have all their files wiped from the computer. The subject was contacted again by phone and told that the files would be returned once they provided a credit card number. These types of crimes cannot be investigated and reparations to the victim will likely never be made. Authorities continue to remind everyone to not provide any personal or banking information or allow access to private computer files to callers or online solicitors. Take the time to verify the validity of each and every such request before even considering release of such information.
