Iowa DNR Reports Sunday Oil Spill On Storm Lake Contained And Cleaned

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says an oil spill that occurred on Sunday afternoon on Storm Lake has been contained and cleaned up with the help of crews from a dredging operation, the City of Storm Lake and the Iowa DNR. Dredge America was pumping water from the bilge of a work boat on the lake Sunday when the operator left the pump unattended. The pump ran until it had removed all the water, then pumped an estimated two gallons of oil that was on top of the bilge water into the lake. The result was a sheen of oil approximately 100 by 100 feet on the lake surface. Dredge America operators immediately shut off the pump and put absorbent pads on the oil. Booms were used to contain the oil until the absorption was complete.
