First Ever College Summit Includes Students From Local Districts

Sixty high school freshmen and six college student mentors from across the state will be gathering for the first ever GEAR UP college preparedness summit. Beginning Sunday, June 12, the students will spend four days and three nights at Grand View University in Des Moines to work on building leadership skills, exploring education and career options and developing relationships with peers and college student mentors. GEAR UP—Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a seven-year project that is following more than 6,000 students in 12 Iowa school districts from seventh grade through their first year of college with a goal of preparing them for financial and academic success. The program is a partnership between those 12 districts, which includes: Denison, Fort Dodge, Perry and Storm Lake, Iowa College Aid and 40 institutions of higher education and community organizations.
