In addition to an accidental shooting in Guthrie County this past Saturday, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources has reported there were two more injuries related to hunting and trapping in the state on Sunday, Dec. 13. At approximately 7:45 a.m. Sunday morning, 70-year-old David William Clark of Marshalltown, who was deer hunting near the Basswood Recreation area near Emmetsburg in Palo Alto County, was sitting on a log with a loaded shotgun when it accidentally discharged as he was changing positions. Clark was transported to the Palo Alto County Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his hand. At approximately 9 a.m. that same day, 51-year-old Carey Ahlers Jr. of Worthington suffered a self-inflicted injury to his leg while checking traps near Hopkinton in Delaware County. Ahlers’ .22 caliber handgun accidentally discharged as he was attempting to load it. He was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Both of these incidents remain under investigation by the Iowa DNR.
