Updated: Bomb threat at Carroll Middle School comes to swift conclusion

A camera system located in the hallway at the Carroll Middle School, which was upgraded just a few weeks ago, is credited with playing a large role in determining who left a bomb threat scrawled on toilet paper at the building in one of the girl’s restrooms on Monday. Superintendent Rob Cordes says the situation, understandably, put a lot of fear in people’s minds with some students staying home. However, following multiple sweeps of the building by the Carroll Police Department, classes were back in session on time Tuesday morning.

He says that with help from the Carroll Police Department and video from the camera system, the responsible party was identified.

Carroll Police Chief Brad Burke said the student has been charged with Threat of an Incendiary Device, a class D Felony. Since the student is a minor, the case will be remanded to the juvenile courts. Both Cordes and Burke commended the middle school staff’s actions in a delicate situation, saying the partnership and vigilant work of all was instrumental in ensuring the safety of students and staff and in a speedy resolution to the matter.

To maintain confidentiality, Cordes did not comment on any disciplinary action that may be taken by the district.

Burke added the systems and protocols in place made a big difference in this situation, as well as others the staff and police department have worked together on in the past.
