Faculty at UofI endorse raising bar-entry age

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The faculty council at the University of
Iowa has endorsed a proposal that would increase the minimum age to
enter bars in Iowa City from 19 years-old to 21 years-old.
The faculty council on Tuesday also supported a resolution that
would encourage more classes to be scheduled on Friday mornings.
University officials say that will help stop drinking on Thursday
nights. Later this month, the Iowa City Council is to consider a
21-only ordinance.
University of Iowa Faculty Senate President David Drake says
faculty "care deeply" about their students and "can't sit still
any longer."
However faculty council member and law professor Sheldon Kurtz
voted against supporting the ordinance. He said it's inappropriate
for the faculty senate to vote on a political issue.
