Iowa approves $12 million for road maintenance

AMES, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa Transportation Commission has
authorized $12 million in additional funding for statewide roadway
maintenance.
The commission said Tuesday that the money comes after the Iowa
Department of Transportation recommended using more resources to
maintain the state's deteriorating roads.
Nancy Richardson is director of the Iowa Department of
Transportation. Richardson says there's "no doubt" that this year
has been one of the worst in recent history for potholes, cracking
and other road problems. She calls it a "systemic statewide
problem" and says it has to be addressed quickly to prevent
further damage and provide safe travel.
The department says the money is possible because of recent
favorable bid lettings.
