Manning Fire Department receives grant


The Manning Fire Department will receive the grant they had applied for through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.  Iowa Senator Tom Harkin announced today that Manning Fire and Rescue would be one of nine fire departments that were approved.  The over $264,000 grant will help them purchase a new pumper-tanker truck which is estimated to cost around $275,000.  Fire

Carroll Conservation Department to take people on trip to Sand HIlls


The Carroll County Conservation Department is teaming up with other area county conservation departments to take interested people to the Sand Hills in Nebraska in March to watch cranes as they migrate north.  Carroll County Naturalist Matt Weitrich says it will be a very fun trip.

Man arrested in stolen vehicle and forgery case


38-year-old Chad Wadsley of Fort Dodge was booked into the Greene County Jail Wednesday at noon after he was arrested on a warrant for 2 counts of forgery, 2nd degree theft and two counts of 5th degree theft.  The charges were filed following an investigation into a stolen vehicle and forged checks in Churdan back in May 2011.  Wadsley is currently being held in the Greene County

Bruner announces run for Iowa District Senate Seat


Mary Bruner of Carroll announced Wednesday morning that she will seek the democratic nomination for the District 26 Seat on the Iowa Senate currently held by Republican Steve Kettering who announced late last year that he would not seek re-election.  Bruner says she decided to run after talking with her family and friends and feels Western Iowa needs to keep a voice in Des Moines.

Lake View chosen as over night stop for 2012 RAGBRAI

Carroll Rescue League taking care of dogs that were neglected


The Animal Rescue League in Carroll received 5 cocker spaniels and 1 doxen that is pregnant from according to director Stacey Vonnahme.  The 6 dogs were delivered by authorities following the raid Wednesday afternoon in Sac County.  Volunteers and staff will begin grooming the dogs tonight which could take a couple of days to complete.  Vonnahme told Carroll Broadcasting Thursday

Breda man dies from injuries sustained in a fall


Funeral services for 44-year-old Scott Koster of Breda are pending at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda.  Koster died from injuries suffered in a fall Wednesday afternoon around 2:24.  According to official reports he was wiring some lights in a shop at 3991 Yankee Avenue in Sac County when he accidently stepped off the edge of the scaffolding he was working on.  Koster fell about 10

Dogs seized during Sac County raid


The Sac County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant Wednesday morning around 11:00 at a rural Southern Sac County farm.  During their search a building was found that contained cages of animals being kept in what is believed to be unsanitary conditions.  The animals mainly cocker spaniels were seized and with the assistance of the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, were removed

Lohrville building to be closed


The elementary learning center in Lohrville will officially close at the end the this school year after the South Central Calhoun School Board unanimously approved the motion during Monday night’s meeting.  SCC Superintendent Jeff Kruse says they discussed some of the positives about the closure with around 40 residents.

The Carroll Chamber of Commerce held their annual banquet Monday night where they honored many people and businesses for their contribution to Carroll.  Karen Tim, of St Anthony Regional Hospital announced this year’s humanitarian award winner.

Greg Schreck celebrates 25 years as Carroll Fire Cheif


Carroll Volunteer Fire Chief Greg Schreck began his 25th year as chief in Carroll and his 30th as a fireman in Carroll. He began his career in Templeton where he worked as a volunteer fireman before moving to Carroll 30 years ago. Schreck says he didn’t plan on being chief this long.

Dedham railroad crossing could be repaired this summer

Iowa City woman charged with not reporting alleged child abuse


The woman who runs the Broadway Neighborhood Center in Iowa City is facing charges for not reporting an allegation of child abuse. Iowa City Police Sergeant Denise Brotherton says it may be the first time in state history that a person known as a mandatory reporter was arrested for not reporting a possible crime.

 A decision by the Obama Administration that forces church affiliated employers to cover birth control in their healthcare plans has outraged religious organizations across the country. Federal Reserve official sees ag economy continuing to grow


 The vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City believes the agricultural economy should remain in a growth period for at least another year. Speaking at an agricultural economics conference in Sioux City, Jason Henderson, says he sees comparisons of today to the boom times of the 1970′s.

Missouri River flood clean up far from over


 An update on flood recovery efforts in western Iowa is on the agenda as the State Interagency Missouri River Authority meets today in Des Moines. Chuck Gipp, deputy director of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says the process of cleaning up all of the damage and rebuilding after last year’s summer-long flood is far from over.

Traffic deaths lowest since 1944


 State officials are reporting there were fewer traffic fatalities in Iowa last year than anytime since 1944. David Stutz, with the Iowa Department of Transportation, credits a number of safety improvements made to highways and interstates.

Text messages lead to charges against southwest Iowa teacher


A teacher in southwest Iowa resigned Wednesday after being confronted by school officials about allegations he sent inappropriate text messages and pictures to one of his female students.  A military news website is reporting an Iowa Air National Guard unit with 1,000 personnel is on a list of potential cuts in the latest budget for the U.S. Air Force. Iowa National Guard spokesman Colonel Greg Hapgood has seen the report from Military.com, but says nothing is confirmed.

Proposal would yield toughest defense of gun rights in U.S.


 A proposal to add an amendment to the Iowa Constitution that would ensure Iowans have the right to keep and bear arms has cleared an initial hurdle in the Iowa House.
Representative Matt Windschitl, a Republican from Missouri Valley, says Iowa is one of just six states with a constitution that does not provide “gun rights” to its citizens.

Iowa officials encouraged by modification of farm labor rules for kids


 Federal officials have agreed to modify a plan that’s designed to protect children from dangerous jobs on family farms. The U.S. Labor Department has been under fire from farm groups because the proposed rules were seen as too restrictive. Iowa Senator Tom Harkin says he’s encouraged to see the rules are being reconsidered by labor leaders.

IRS says many still leaving tax credit on the table


The Internal Revenue Service is asking you to be sure to check and see if you are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit or ETIC. I.R.S. spokesperson, Verlinda Paul, says many people don’t get the credit because they don’t know about it.
