Road construction in Glidden progressing

Glidden, Iowa -- Construction on 1st Street in Glidden near the Co-op building is making progress. The cement has been broken up and hauled away. Underground utilities and storm sewer lines are now being installed. Once those service lines are in place crews will begin earthwork in preparation to pour cement for the new street.

The earthwork is already completed on another paving project north of town at Sherwood Avenue. However, the rains earlier this spring caused the north end to catch and retain a lot of water. Making it necessary for crews to do additional work in order to drain-down and dry out the section of road before they could move forward with paving plans. It was also discovered that additional storm water pipes were required at the 1st Street location in order to make drainage more efficient.

The city was made aware of the work order changes and will officially approve the approximate $12,000 worth of additional costs for each project at their next city council meeting. The project on 1st Street near the Co-op has a deadline for completion set for September 1st so construction won’t interfere with harvesting this fall.
