Carroll, Iowa -- Swan Lake near Carroll and the Whiterock Conservancy by Coon Rapids will each be receiving osprey as part of a continuing program with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Whiterock has received osprey for the past 5 to 6 years and Swan Lake received three last year. This year they each will receive 5 and Carroll County Naturalist Matt Wetrich says they hope to continue to do this for several more years. He says these will be just the right age.
He hopes a couple will come back and make Swan Lake their respective home. The osprey will be brought in from Northern Minnesota and should arrive sometime in July.
They eat fish wish makes Swan Lake a great spot for them to nest. Wetrich expects some of the osprey migrating north to stop at Swan Lake in the next few weeks. Those should stay for a couple weeks before finishing their journey north.
