SCCB And ISU Extension Office Hosting Youth Ice Fishing Clinic Saturday In Lake View

The Sac County Conservation Board (SCCB) and Sac County Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach are teaming up this weekend to give youth a chance to step out onto Arrowhead Lake and experience ice fishing. A clinic will give first- through seventh-graders lessons on ice safety before they make an attempt to reel in some fish. County Youth Coordinator, Steph Erpelding, says the popularity of this event has continue to grow since its inception, and so many people have registered already that they’ve had to change their venue.

The seminar is now getting underway at 9 a.m. Saturday in Speaker Park starting with a presentation from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Erpelding has been helping put on the clinic for seven years and has only heard positive comments from kids and parents about their experience.

Erpelding says kids who attend will also have a chance to win some ice fishing gear to get them started on their new hobby.

Reports from the DNR place ice thickness at between 9 to 18 inches, well above the recommended safe level of four inches. There is no cost to attend the event, but an RSVP is required. To register, contact the SCCB at 712-662-4530 or Sac County Extension office at 712-662-7131.
