Iowa Attorney General Warns Of Scams That Bloom In Good Weather

The calendar says spring is here, and when the weather finally clears, people’s attention will turn to home improvement projects. This month’s focus for Iowa Attorney General, Tom Miller, is on the sketchy contractors and scams that tend to come out of the woodwork this time of year. Home-improvement problems topped the list of consumer complaints filed in 2017 at 224. Miller says there are several red flags you can watch out for to protect your pocketbook and your home. Most contractors are too busy to be going door-to-door looking for work or to make cold calls over the phone. Avoid these types of solicitations. Particularly after there has been some type of storm or natural disaster, be wary of out-of-state contractors and also be leery of anyone employing high-pressure tactics. To get the job done right, Miller advises homeowners to make a clear plan, check references, get a written contract and look to finance the project with local banks or credit unions instead of through the contractor.
