Glidden City Council Adopts Drug And Alcohol Policy For Emergency Responders

The Glidden City Council approved a new drug and alcohol policy last week setting regulations for the community’s volunteer first responders. City Clerk, Suzy Danner, says the policy was adopted based on a recommendation from the Iowa Communities Assurance Pool (ICAP), the city’s insurer.

The policy states no alcohol shall be stored at the Glidden Fire Station with an exception for annual fundraising events. It also sets expectations for the volunteers by declaring individuals who report to service under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any other substance that impairs the volunteer’s mental or physical capacity will not participate in any department operations or functions. The policy also allows the city to provide an assistance program for volunteers or their immediate family with a substance abuse problem. Danner says nearly every agency involved favored adopting the policy.

The council’s vote to install the new policy was unanimous and went into effect on Monday, April 23. A copy can be found included below this story.
