DNR Study Shows Decrease In Recovery Rate For Containers Covered Under Bottle Bill

A recent study by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says recovery rates for containers covered under the bottle deposit law is down 15 percent compared to a decade ago. A Waste Characterization Study has determined only 71 percent of all returnable containers are turned in, a sharp decrease from 86 percent in 2007. When broken down by material, 69 percent of aluminum, 60 percent of plastic and 83 percent of glass containers are recycled. According to the DNR, this drop has also been seen in other states that have a similar bottle bill that provides incentives for recycling. The DNR conducts these studies every five years, and the results are used to calculate how much and what kinds of wastes are being deposited in Iowa’s landfills.
