Two County Police Chase Ends Near Panora

A police chase, spanning two counties and including multiple law enforcement agencies, ended Saturday night near Panora. At approximately 10:15 p.m., a Dallas County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to stop a 1995 Honda Civic, driven by 23-year-old Zackari Tyler Smith of Council Bluffs, for a non-functioning taillight when Smith decided to flee west on Highway 44. The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office was alerted, and deputies placed spike strips on the roadway to stop the chase. Smith abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot just south of Panora where he was apprehended after a short chase at approximately 10:45 p.m. He was booked into the Dallas County Jail on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and trespassing, both simple misdemeanors, and unlawful possession of prescription drugs, possession of a controlled substance and eluding, all serious misdemeanors. He is currently being held on a $4,000 bond, and a court date on the eluding charge is scheduled for March 1. The Iowa State Patrol also assisted in the chase.
