District Conservationist with the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service, Clint Miller, and Tom Simons, Chairman of Carroll County Soil and Water Conservation, made a special request of the Carroll County Board of Supervisors on Monday morning. Miller says with a strong focus on stewardship of natural resources, they want to set aside June 20 as Soil Health Day in Carroll County.

Miller adds it is all-around better for agriculture if production can be increased with less inputs. The request of the supervisors was to proclaim June 20 Soil Health Day. Simons says there is evidence throughout the county of how well soil conservation efforts are working on those farms already implementing practices such as no-till.

Both groups are hopeful that if something can get started in Carroll County, other counties will start to incorporate similar educational opportunities for the general public. The Soil Health Day proclamation was supported by all supervisors present, Chair Gene Meiners was absent. The free Soil Health Field Day will begin at 9 a.m. at the Jim and Donna Riesberg farm north of Roselle. A noon lunch will be provided.
