Police Department’s K9 5K Gives Participants A Chance To Meet The Man Behind Training Carroll’s Newest Officer

More than 40 police officers and citizens, along with their dogs, turned out for Saturday morning’s Carroll Police Department 5K K9 run at Swan Lake State Park. The department’s newest officer, Eudoris 3, and his littermate were in attendance. The man who trained the canines, Joshua Morton from Canine Tactical of Iowa, was at the event to talk with attendees about how the dogs are trained. Morton served more than eight years as a U.S. Navy SEAL and was the first military working dog handler for SEAL Team Four. He says he uses his experience in that role to create what he believes are the best K9 units available.

Eudoris 3 will be proficient in narcotics detection, tracking and patrol duties by the time he enters service for the Carroll Police Department in November. Police dogs can often be intimidating, but the canines seemed right at home during the event. Morton says that is a result of how the dogs are trained to respond to certain situations.

When he enters service, Eudoris 3 will be nine months old and have undergone eight weeks of training. Morton says the training is rigorous, but is not a time-consuming as it sounds.

Money raised from the event will be used to purchase supplies for when the canine arrives. Carroll Police Officer, Justin Ferrin, was selected to serve as the department’s K9 handler and will be starting his five-week training on Oct. 23.
