Lake City Police Department Looks To Become More Independent Concerning Service Weapons

The Lake City Police Department is exploring the option of renewing their firearm inventory, but this time the weapons will be in the department’s name. The issued weapons currently being used by officers are actually on loan from the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations (DCI). “In the case something happens to one of [the firearms],” said Police Chief, Bobby Rist. “They might not have another of the same brand, same caliber, and same model to replace it with.” This would leave the department a weapon short. By owning the weapons, the department would be able to keep a consistent supply of ammunition, make repairs if needed and add modifications such as laser sights and flashlights. The city has not yet approved the replacement plan but has started looking into funding options through grants.
