Kids Race Across The Carroll Aquatic Center In Boats Made Of Cardboard

Kids involved with the Carroll Summer Fun Camp visited the Carroll Aquatic Center Tuesday morning, and their goal was to avoid getting in the water. Last week, teams of campers spent hours building boats made of cardboard, duct tape and floaties to race across the pool. Four teams, the Apollo, the Torpedo, the Directioner and Carroll Venom, battled across the swimming lanes. The Directioner ended up taking home first place in the one-minute contest. Isabella Baldus, one of the crewmembers on the winning vessel, was unsure if their boat would be able to stay above water.

The Apollo’s crew did not fare as well. One of its sailors, Wade Olbrecht, says giving their boat a test run before the race may have been a bad idea.

Their cardboard craft only made it a few yards before capsizing. Miles Bogue claims they still won the race, despite the mishap.

This was just one of the many activities the Carroll Summer Fun Camp provides to its campers. They are in their third year of operation and have seen their participation double to 45 kids since it formed in 2015. The camp lasts for six weeks from July 4 to  mid-August. Photos and a video of the race can be found included below.
