On Friday, Kuemper High School (KHS) students displayed their spring science projects to judges and the public during the 2017 KHS Science Fair Open House. Each group receives a score based on their presentation, creativity and use of the scientific method. Only seniors are not required to make a project, and science instructor, Andrew Klenk, says the diversity of projects really showed the resourcefulness of his students.
One of the sophomore presenters, Aaron Schreck, used a classic concept, a potato cannon, and tested a variety of different fuels to see which launched the veggies the farthest.
Schreck concluded WD-40 is the best fuel for the homemade cannon. Two freshman scientists, Halle Simons and Anna Niehaus, explored the chemistry behind baking.
They both agreed eating their results was the best part. During the open house, over 300 parents and community members visited to see the 131 projects created by the students.
