Iowa In Store For Extra Colorful Fall As Leaves Begin To Change

Friday was the autumnal equinox, which marks the beginning of fall, and experts with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) say we are in store for some splendid sights as leaves start to change color. Jeff Goerndt, state forester with the DNR, says, “I think we are going to have a decent fall color year because of the weather we’re currently having. You get the best and brightest colors when you have the kind of fall weather we are currently seeing with sunny days and crisp, cool nights.” Typically, leaves will start to change color around the end of September and into early October. Leaf color change is cause by a chemical called phytochrome, which slows chlorophyll production, and allows the other colors in leaves to show. Chlorophyll gives leaves their green color. The DNR provides a weekly fall color report each Monday afternoon in the fall. A link to that report can be found below.
