Honor Flight Dinner Raising Funds To Send Area Veterans To Washington, D.C.

Area counties are filled with residents who have made sacrifices in honoring us and their country by serving in the Armed Forces. As a way to thank them for their service, the local American Legion helps sponsor the Brushy Creek Honor Flights, which provide tours to Washington, D.C. Commander of the American Legion Fred F. and Norman J. Bruning Post #607, Bob Fasbender, and Carroll County Commander, Dick Meiners, are helping raise money to send veterans on upcoming flights. Fasbender says this is deeply important to him as he is a veteran, and since he has not participated before, he may be on the next Brushy Creek Honor Flight out of Fort Dodge on May 6.

The flights leave early in the morning and come back that same day to give veterans a chance to visit the various monuments. Meiners has not been on an honor flight yet either, and says he one day hopes to be able to go on one. As the County Commander, Meiners is responsible for having a local post host a fundraiser for the effort. This coming Sunday, March 26, they will be asking for free-will donations at the Brushy Creek Honor Flight supper at the Dedham Legion Hall.

Fasbender added that there are currently 15 veterans from our area signed up for the May flight and another 20 who have registered for the next flight on Sept. 16. Dinners will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. For those unable to attend, donations designated to “Honor Flight” can be sent by following the instructions included below.
