Holy Spirit Second Graders Run Their Own Businesses During Market Day

Second graders at Holy Spirit Center in Carroll had an opportunity Friday afternoon for a hands-on chance to learn about economics. This is the second year students participated in “Market Day”, and Holly Janning, a second grade social studies instructor, is the teacher who originally brought the program to the school.

Each student received $15 in make-believe money to spend at their classmates’ shops during the shopping spree. One young shopkeeper, Shelby Greving, set up her store selling notepads and pencils and used what she learned in class about running a business to create her advertisements.

When the students return to class on Monday, Janning says they review the results of Market Day to ensure the students are starting to understand economics. Some of the participants from last year got to join in, too.

She noted it is always easier to get lessons to stick when the kids are having fun. A wide variety of goods were available for students to buy and sell such as snacks, drinks, homemade toys and school supplies.
