Hazardous Waste Day Encourages Residents To Dispose Of Dangerous Materials Safely

The Carroll County Solid Waste Management Commission and Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) are urging residents to dispose of dangerous substances by taking advantage of Household Hazardous Materials Day later this month. The event to dispose of unsafe chemicals will be held on Saturday, April 22 from 9 a.m to 11 a.m. in DMACC’s Carroll campus parking lot. Commission Director, Mary Wittry, says identifying a hazardous waste only takes a moment.

Metro Waste Authority, a government entity out of Bondurant, will be at the site to collect and dispose of the waste. Wittry says the turn in is straightforward, at no cost to Carroll County residents and quick with their help.

There are some items that will not be accepted, including: latex paint, oil filters, ammunition, explosives, asbestos and radioactive materials. If the items are turned away, citizens will be informed of proper disposal options. Wittry points out it is more than an environmental concern when it comes to throwing things away.

Any waste brought to the disposal site should be left in its original packaging and kept in the trunk or truck bed during transit. Business, school and farm waste will be accepted for a charge.
