Retail gas prices ticked down slightly this week, closing down four cents at an average $2.41 per gallon in Iowa, and falling five cents nationally to an average of $2.48 per gallon. According to AAA Iowa, the new lower Iowa prices are still 20 cents higher than this time last year. Retail diesel fuel prices in the state were down just a penny from last week, averaging $2.68 a gallon, compared to a cost of $2.41 in 2016. The current Iowa diesel average is five cents lower than the national average of $2.73.
