DMACC Students From Carroll Campus Participate In Crash Simulations

A total of nearly 200 DMACC students from the Ankeny, Boone, Carroll, Newton and Urban campuses participated in crash simulations early this week. A 10-vehicle crash, a bicyclist struck by a motorcycle and a vehicle that had overturned on a victim gave all participants a chance to apply their classroom learning to real-life simulations. Two people died and many more were injured in the 10-vehicle crash simulation that required fire science students to extricate victims, criminal justice students to manage the scenes and investigate the cause and nurses to treat the injured. The bicyclist was injured in the motorcycle crash simulation and was treated in a triage area then transported to the hospital by ambulance, and the fire science students used an inflatable device to “lift” the overturned vehicle. Following the simulations, a debriefing was held to determine what can be improved upon for the next time.
