Audit Finds Former Kuemper Coach Improperly Operated Bank Account At Roosevelt High In Des Moines

A former Roosevelt High School girls’ basketball coach, Des Moines teacher and former Kuemper Catholic High School coach, Chris Cundiff, is named in an Iowa state audit report for operating a bank account outside the district’s purview. Two accounts were flagged, the Rough Riders Basketball account opened by Cundiff that deposited more than $19,600, and another called the Rider Club Fundraising account, opened by the booster club and run by the activities department. KCCI reports that auditors say more than $643,000 in unsupported expenses passed through those accounts. The investigation was initiated after a parent questioned a 2014-15 fundraiser. Cundiff claims he opened the account because of a deficit in the official school account, but auditors note there was a positive balance of $750 when he was hired as coach in 2007. The investigation revealed more than $6,500 was transferred from the Rough Riders account to Cundiff’s personal account with $2,000 transferred back. There were also purchases made for gifts to coaches attending the College World Series and cash withdrawals that were reportedly to pay coaches, who have since denied receiving payment. Cundiff resigned his position with Roosevelt in 2015 after the initiation of an internal audit. The Rider Club Fundraising account includes more than $1.7 million in deposits from 2006 to 2017. Cundiff’s time at Kuemper ended in the 2006-07 school year.
