Attorneys General Asking For Preservation Of Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Independence

Attorneys General from 17 different states are urging President Donald Trump to preserve and protect the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) independence from political interference. Iowa Attorney General, Tom Miller, says they want the country’s leader to vow to vigorously enforce state and federal laws that ensure fairness and deter fraud. The group penned a letter to the President on Tuesday, supporting the CFPB’s federal consumer protection enforcement role. They also expressed deep concern over the President’s choice for bureau acting director, Mick Mulvaney, after the first director, Richard Cordray, stepped down last month. According to this letter, it has been widely reported that Mulvaney has said the agency is “a joke…in a sick, sad kind of way,” and “an awful example of bureaucracy that has gone wrong.” The letters adds that such statements about an agency that has helped millions of American consumers are categorically false and because of them, he should be disqualified from serving.
