Widespread Utility Scam Affecting MidAmerican Customers

On Tuesday, nearly 40 MidAmerican Energy customers reported receiving calls in a utility scam that is circulating throughout the state. The caller claimed to be a MidAmerican employee and threatened to disconnect service if payment was not received. Scammers using this tactic often require the person to pay with a pre-paid debit card, sometimes referred to as a Green Dot card. This, according to MidAmerican, is a red flag as they do not accept these types of cards for bill payment. The reports have indicated the scammers are persistent and use sophisticated methods to trick customers, including the use of caller ID technology and phone response systems that mimic MidAmerican Energy’s, making the call appear as if it is coming from their offices when it is not. If you receive one of these suspicious calls, hang up and call your local authorities and MidAmerican Energy at 888-427-5632.
