Unemployment Rates In Region On The Rise

Area counties are recording an increase in unemployment rates for the first time in nearly a year. The eight-county Western Iowa Advantage region saw rates rice nearly one half a percent to 4.4 percent in March of 2016 compared to 3.9 percent at this same time last year. The numbers released by Iowa Workforce Development reveal that Carroll County is still recording the lowest rate at 2.9 percent, while Adair is at 3.3 and Greene and Ida Counties both report 3.5 percent unemployment. Sac comes in with 3.8 percent, Audubon County at 4.2 and Guthrie at 4.9 percent. Crawford County continues to see higher numbers in their unemployment rankings after last year’s Tyson closure and have a 6.9 percent rate for March of 2016. The U.S. unemployment rate for last month was 5 percent.
