The Time Capsule Is Open

At this morning’s (Monday) Carroll County Board of Supervisors meeting, everyone in attendance got a glimpse 25 years into Carroll County’s past as they opened the time capsule that was locked up and tucked away in October of 1991. Supervisor Dean Schettler, who is on the Courthouse 50th Anniversary Committee, did the honors.

In addition to yearbooks from Carroll and Kuemper schools, packets from Coon Rapids and Ar-We-Va schools and area newspapers, the time capsule held t-shirts from back when Iowa State University still had a baseball team and a BACCI, or Bike Around Carroll County Iowa. There was one item that was particularly apropos for Jean Seidl, Carroll County Treasurer.

The good humor remained as Schettler went through the box and speculation continued on what type of 25-year-old media they would find as they kept digging. Eventually, he held up the most modern storage tool of the early 90s, the VHS tape.

All of the items in the time capsule will be on display at the courthouse for the 50th Anniversary Celebration that begins with a Chamber Coffee, Friday, Oct. 21 at 8 a.m. At 9 a.m. that day, a special ceremony will be held. A full listing of the items in the time capsule can be found below. We will be loading a video of the opening shortly. We will bring you more information on the upcoming celebration and some of the items that will be enclosed in the next time capsule in an upcoming broadcast.
