State Fair Straw Poll Ranks Politicians, Athletics And Entertainment

The fair closed down Sunday evening, giving Secretary of State, Paul Pate, the opportunity to tally the official results of the Straw Poll. The poll, which was conducted at the Secretary of State’s booth inside the Varied Industries Building throughout the 11-day event, received a total of 6,419 votes. He says that Trump outpolled Hillary Clinton in the presidential poll by 48 percent to 37 percent, with a significant number of voters casting their ballot for “other” at 15 percent. Chuck Grassley was the favorite of fairgoers as well, raking in 58 percent of the vote over his Democratic Senate opponent, Patty Judge, who recorded 37 percent. Just five percent selected other in the Senate poll. Additional unscientific data was collected with the attendees saying that Lady Antebellum was their favorite fair act for 2016 with 18 percent of the vote and 48 percent of the voting public agreeing that the Iowa Hawkeyes had the best year in collegiate athletics. Pate said that in addition to the Straw Poll, his booth was able to register 212 voters and helped 151 people request absentee ballots during the fair.
