Petition To Keep Stoplights On Highway 30 Picks Up Steam Quickly

The two lights on Highway 30 at the intersections of Adams and Court Streets are still covered for a traffic study that began earlier this year on June 22. Steve Blackburn, owner of Browns Shoe Fit, represented business owners from Carroll’s downtown shopping district at Monday night’s city council, telling city leaders these owners do not want the lights to be permanently removed. Blackburn said it was difficult to offer viewpoints on this issue to the city and decided a petition was the best route to take.

Blackburn says there are two ways to get your signature on the petition. The first is to sign an online petition regarding the issue, and the second is to physically sign the petition.

Since going online at approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27, the petition has already garnered over 65 signatures. Blackburn added this does not include the number of physical signatures collected on the other petition. The city is also collecting public comments on the traffic light turnoff until Tuesday, Oct. 4. The results of the traffic study will be presented to the city council on Monday, Oct. 10 to begin the discussion on whether the lights should be permanently removed. A link to the online petition can be found included with this story on our website.
