Multiple Carroll entities back proposed Graham Park Recreation District study

At its upcoming meeting on Monday the Carroll City Council is expected to accept a proposal to enter into an agreement with the Iowa State University Community Design Lab (CDL) in order to develop a Carroll Recreation District Master Plan. The proposal will take into consideration facilities in Graham Park, the Carroll REC Center, and all of the athletic field and aquatic facilities located to the east of the park in order to “create a vision for the recreation district that connects it to other community assets and events.” The joint effort includes Des Moines Area Community College and both the Kuemper and Carroll schools, and at their most recent meeting members of the Carroll Community School Board were asked to contribute $3,000 towards the total contract cost of $28,875 with CDL. School Board Member Brad Jorgensen, who also serves on the Stadium Committee which is currently looking at making improvements at the football field complex, says city officials are aware of the district’s current scrutiny of the facility.

The Stadium Committee, he says, does want to make the facility appealing both on the inside and outside, and the proposed CDL study could serve as an aide in their search to find a common theme which would tie in with surrounding facilities. The CCSD board did approve the city’s request and funds from the physical plant levy will cover the cost. A letter from the city of Carroll indicated Kuemper Catholic Schools and DMACC have also submitted letters of support.
