Investigation Continues In Friday’s Plane Crash Near Sac City

The Sac County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Aviation Administration are continuing to investigate a fatal plane crash that occurred Friday morning, July 29.  At approximately 9:48 a.m., Raccoon Valley Electric Cooperative crews responded to reports of a power outage in the 2900 block of Sierra Ave., three and half miles south of Sac City, and discovered the wreckage of a crop dusting aircraft and the body of the pilot, 44-year-old Mark James Watson of Burlington. It appears, from results of the preliminary investigation, that Watson clipped a static line on the high-voltage power lines owned by MidAmercan Energy. This caused the Air-Tracker INCE AT-402 plane to crash into the field owned by Steve Hansen of Sac City. Watson had recently refueled with 160 gallons of fuel and reloaded with 300 gallons of chemical at the Carroll airport. Region 5 Hazmat of the Fort Dodge Fire Department, the Sac City Fire Department and Sac County Emergency Medical Services assisted at the scene. Watson’s body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Ankeny for autopsy. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will continue to monitor the crash site where the fuel and chemicals were absorbed.
