Have an outdoor project? Make sure to call 811 first

No matter the size of your outdoor project if you’re doing some digging remember to call ahead first so you know where underground utility lines are located. Adam Wright, Vice President of Gas Delivery for MidAmerican Energy, says that from small do-it-yourself tasks to large construction jobs, every digging project requires a quick call to 811. He adds people are required by law to call 811 at least 48 hours prior to any digging project and, that “even the smallest dent or scratch to an underground facility can put those doing the digging and their neighbors at risk.”  People can call the toll-free number and the system will automatically connect a caller with their state’s one call center. Professionals are then sent out to dig sites in order to locate and mark the underground power lines, gas lines, and other utilities with flags or paint. If 811 is not available in your specific location Iowa residents can call 1-800-292-8989. MidAmerican customers can find out more under the company’s Digging & Excavating website page.
