Glidden Man Air Lifted To Des Moines After Accident With Snow Plow

A vehicle collided with a snowplow on Storm Creek Bridge about a quarter mile east of Quail Ave on Highway 30 east of Carroll at approximately 8:24 a.m. yesterday (Wednesday). Low visibility and blowing snow contributed to the accident in which 34-year-old Nathan John Thompson of Glidden was heading westbound on Highway 30 in a 1999 Chrysler 300 when he approached an eastbound 1999 International 4000 series plow driven by 50-year-old Daniel Brent Holmes of Carroll and licensed to the State of Iowa. Holmes was traveling across the bridge and was bringing the wing in towards the truck when he struck the south guardrail on the bridge. Thompson collided with the front rear driver axle of the plow and was then pushed backwards and up onto the north guardrail. Thompson was removed by mechanical means and transported to St. Anthony Regional Hospital by Carroll County Emergency Services. He was later transferred by medical helicopter to a hospital in Des Moines for treatment of head injuries. There was an estimated $2,500 in damage to the snow plow and $2,000 damage to the bridge. The Thompson vehicle was totaled in the accident. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
