Carroll Stadium Committee learns more about safety record of synthetic feilds

Early last week the Carroll Stadium Committee discussed the possibility of installing a synthetic grass system at the Carroll football stadium. Members of the committee not only learned about the system’s installation process, but also about its safety record. Midwest Field Turf representative Cory Curnyn explains that new synthetic fields are nothing like old Astro Turf fields.

The “in fill” cushion is soft, yet firm, and is composed of 3.5 lbs. of rubber and 4 lbs. of sand per square foot which, Curnyn says, mimics a natural grass field. The committee did bring up a concern about a proposed connection between crumb rubber and cancer risks outlined by an NBC report which aired in late 2015. Curnyn says it is unfortunate media outlets ran with it, however, current studies show there are no elevated health risks.

Studies conducted by the State of Washington and a statement from the EPA also back Curnyn’s comments. Members of the Stadium Committee will now take what they’ve learned into consideration prior to making a recommendation to the Carroll School Board at a later date.
