Carroll County Courthouse Is Rededicated In Style On Chilly October Morning

Eric Neu entertained the crowd in his typical, humorous fashion at this morning’s (Friday) 50th Anniversary Celebration for the Carroll County Courthouse, saying when the courthouse was built in 1966, it drew a lot of derision, much of that from the rotating clock on the roof. The wind took a toll on it, however, and it required nearly constant maintenance.

Carroll County Supervisor Chair, Neil Bock, was given the privilege of sealing the 2016 time capsule, and discussed some of the interesting items that will be encased in it for the next 25 years. Including items that will demonstrate the technology of today.

Long-time Carroll Attorney, the Honorable Judge Ronald H. Schechtman, delivered the dedication address for the courthouse. He was very active throughout his career, serving 14 years as city attorney, as mayor, district court judge, chief judge of the district, senior judge for the Iowa Court of Appeals and a long-time member of the Iowa Development Commission. He said this dedication is a repeat for him as he gave a similar speech 25 years ago at the first re-dedication. He assured everyone, however, that there will not be a “threepeat.” After providing a history of the county and the area, he had some advice for future Carroll County residents, saying ideas should come from the governing and the governed, not just the elected officials and that the major change in the future will be for the leaders to develop the region.

Students of the Serendipity Acting Studio presented live performances of the influential leaders of our current time. Pacey Bogue portrayed Hip Kienapfel, saying Hip stood for Highly influential person. He told the crowd how he was part of two urban renewal projects: formation of New Hope Village and Region XII Council of Governments.

The ceremony closed on this chilly fall morning with a moving rendition of “Amazing Grace” performed by a quintet from All Strings Attached.
