Watson Expresses Remorse At Sentencing

Thirty-two-year-old Jason Michael Watson of Carroll expressed remorse during sentencing this morning (Monday) in the Iowa District Court for Carroll County. Watson, who pled guilty on Aug. 3 to Homicide by Vehicle, Burglary in the 3rd degree and Criminal Mischief came before the court for sentencing on the charges stemming from incidents occurring on Nov. 5, 2014, that resulted in an accident and the death of 43-year-old Evon Eastman of Morehead. Watson told Judge Thomas J. Bice he wished Eastman’s family had been present so he could apologize. He said he knew what he had done was selfish and he can’t take it back, but needs to serve his punishment for taking her away from her four children and her sisters. He added that he needed to focus on getting his life back on track. Judge Bice said after reading the victim impact statements, this case touched him to the very core. He said a long criminal history, the fact that Watson was on probation at the time and his lack of acceptance of responsibility made this a truly criminal act. In accordance with the plea agreement, Judge Bice sentenced Watson to 10 years for Homicide by Vehicle, a Class C Felony, and five years for Burglary in the 3rd Degree, a Class D Felony. Those sentences will be served concurrently. He then sentenced Watson to two years for Criminal Mischief, an aggravated misdemeanor. That charge will be served consecutively to the other two. Watson will receive credit for time served.
