Council Makes Strides In Rec Center Improvements

Carroll, Iowa — As the Carroll City Council prepared for the planning session being held today (Saturday), they reviewed several different items relevant to updates and improvements at the Carroll Rec Center. Jack Wardell, Parks and Recs Director asked the council to approve setting a public hearing for the addition and alterations proposed on the weight room and gymnasium. He said the estimated costs total $498,587. The council adopted the plans and will set a public hearing. The project is expected to go out to bid in late September with construction getting underway later in the year. Wardell also requested that the council approve moving forward with a review of the center’s compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. This will include areas inside and outside of the facility and will be conducted by FEH Design. The total cost of the approved project was $5,685. The final memo presented by Wardell was for moving forward with the development of indoor pool conceptual drawings by Water’s Edge Aquatic Design. Wardell explained the benefit of the $7,200 assessment.

Included in the assessment will be options for additional lap lanes, a zero depth entry, shallow play area, water slides, a current channel, a deep water feature and a better swim lesson area. Council Member Tom Tait, however, questioned the need for a pressure test before spending any more money on plans and assessments
.

The majority of the council agreed they did not believe the testing needed to be done before moving forward with conceptual. However, they did say that it was an important step to have done in the near future. Wardell is continuing to search for a company in the region who can conduct the pressure and stress tests on the current equipment. The council approved the recommendation to proceed with conceptual drawings.
