CCSD Instructional Coaches weigh in on expanding Personal Development workshops

Finding enough time to meet with teachers as part of the Teacher Leadership and Compensation (TLC) program at Carroll Community Schools is posing a challenge for four new Instructional Coaches. At a recent board meeting the coaches were asked if they felt there was enough time allotted for teacher oriented Personal Development (PD) workshops. Last year when the board was planning out this year’s school calendar it was proposed to expand the program, but the idea never came to fruition. High School Instructional Coach, Angie Emerick, had this to say on the topic.

Middle School Instructional Coach Ann Kluver concurred.

Technology Coach Kelli Schulz, who serves all buildings, laid out the potential for disconnect with the teachers; using her schedule as an example.

With limited PD time, Elementary School Coach Kim Shields added there is difficulty trying to schedule in all their programs.

In conclusion the coaches felt teachers and staff would always want to improve upon what they do so it would be feasible to assume that anytime granted to work on things and improve themselves would be welcomed. The four coaches also brought up that the content used during Personal Development time in the past may not have been as personable as it might be now since teachers are collaborating more and sharing their personal stories with each other. During the time of the discussion the CCSD school board was simply hearing feedback about the TLC program with no action taken on the topic of possibly expanding Personal Development workshops. The full discussion can be found below.
