An Old-Fashioned Holiday Kickoff In Jefferson

There will be sugar plum fairies dancing, a special guest will read “Twas the Night Before Christmas: and the First United Methodist Church Bell Choir will ring in the holidays and help with the countdown to Santa throwing the switch and lighting the community tree for the Christmas season. The third Annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting event, sponsored by Jefferson Matters: Main Street, will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3 at the Greene County Courthouse in Jefferson. The first 200 in the door will receive a coupon for the traditional Christmas cookie from the Homestead Bakery, and the first 100 children will receive a free glow stick to help light up the night. Relay for Life will have their luminary Remembrance Tree at the courthouse along with some special luminaries that will be inside the courthouse to add to the festivities. Immediately following the tree lighting, the Thomas Jefferson Garden Board of Directors invites everyone to come to the gardens for more old-fashioned Christmas fun with Victorian carolers and a sleigh for classic family photos. Everyone can participate in the “Tag a Tree” event, where a tag is picked up at the courthouse and taken to the gardens and hung on the tree. One lucky tag will win $50 in Chamber Bucks. The BPO Does will host a free-will soup supper that evening at the Elks Lodge from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. and the Bell Tower will have free admission and more visits with Santa from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.
