2015 Employer Educator Summit Huge Success

The 2015 Employer Educator Summit held last month in Templeton was a success with over 200 employers and educators from the eight county region of Western Iowa Advantage attended the informational event. Speakers inspired attendees as they shared ideas on how to find ways to work towards connecting students to local businesses, especially in the technical fields that are in need of skilled workers. Keynote speaker, Debi Durham is the Director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority. She told the gathered group that Iowa’s businesses are creating high quality jobs, so it is important that we prepare the groundwork with our students so they are equipped with skills that are in demand by today’s businesses. Round table discussions allowed for more casual conversations and brainstorming to take place across industries. The topics at this year’s summit are ones that will be relevant for years to come as today’s economy no longer guarantees financial success with a degree. It is estimated by 2018, 57 percent of jobs will require technical skills, while 33 percent will require a four-year degree. Only 10 percent of jobs will be unskilled.
