Lake City reviewing a couple of ordinances

Lake City, Iowa -- Lake City will continue to gather more information on two ordinances before making a final decision on whether they will move forward or not.  The city council this week passed the first reading on revisions to their opening burning ordinance.  The council is looking at permits for opening burning and whether it’s feasible to have residents get a permit for each open burn.  City officials are also looking at pulling restrictions limiting the hours a person can open burn from 4:00 till midnight.  City Administrator Kimberly Kelly says some residents have indicated they desire to sit around a fire at noon or even past midnight with families and friends.  She says the major concern for the council is the hour’s discussion.  The changes have not been approved yet and the 2nd reading will be held at their next meeting.  The council is also looking into allowing people to raise chickens in city limits.  Kelly says a kid had requested raising chickens in town but couldn’t because of the current ordinance.  Since then other residents have expressed interest.  Kelly says Cedar Rapids and Des Moines allow chickens but many small towns don’t.  Kelly says council members are concerned if they allow chickens what animals would be requested next.  She says they understand the desire for some people to raise chickens or home grown eggs.  The issue has been tabled until the council gathers more information.
